Goal : Government Vocabulary
What are some words do you need to know to understand what government does?
(note- some of the examples were generated from a discussion about how students played in the forest at the primary campus)
1.Resources – living and non-living things we use to survive. (ex. Trees, water, oil)
2.Power – ability to use and collect and decide how resources are used.
3.state – an area of land where people live and use resources (ex. country, city, province, state)
4.Citizen – a person who lives in a state and can help make decisions.
5.Government – a group of people that make decisions for a state (ex. Boss, 2nd boss etc.)
6.Politician – someone who works in politics and government
7.Justice – making things fair for everyone.(ex. Sharing the chicken wood)
8.Law – a rule that people make to keep things fair.
9.Leader – a person who leads other people, they can make laws and decisions for the people.
10. Services- things the government provides for people. (ex. schools, water, sanitation, homeless shelters, hospitals, garbage, recycling, police, pools, ice rinks, firemen, recreation, fields, roads, parks, buses, street lights etc.)
11. Taxes – money that citizens pay to the gov’t so the gov’t can pay for services.
12.Monarchy – a gov’t run by a king or queen. The king has the power.
13.Democracy – a gov’t run by the citizens who make decisions by voting.
14.Dictator – one person rules the state and makes all decisions.
15.Anarchy – everyone for themselves. No rules, no laws, no decisions.
16.Theocracy – rule by God or a god. Power comes from God or a god.
