Grade 5 Elections 2011

This year's grade five election was an historic election. For the first time the grade 5 political parties had to develop a party platform based on a actual budget they would receive from student council. This year's "budget" was $250.00. It represented about $1 per student in the school. This represented "tax" collected from each of the student "citizens".

The political parties had to come up with 2 ideas for their platforms. One initiative had to have some benefit or service for the school community. The other idea or initiative had to have a benefit for the community outside of the school. Political parties were encouraged to develop their platforms around two of the following through lines: How would the ideas help the student "citizens" of SCS become better creation enjoyers, order discoverers, community builders, servant workers, image reflectors, justice seekers, earth keepers, idolatry discerners, or beauty creators.

The political parties came up with many different ideas and developed a campaign based around their leaders. The leaders presented their platforms to the student citizens at chapel on Thursday December 8. Afterwards each student, teacher and parents who attended voted.

It was a very close election this year. The leaders presented their ideas and in the end David of the Foundation Builders Party won. His party will be using the money to invest in a series of hot chocolate sales at the middle campus. The money raised will be used to support students at our sister school in Honduras. Congratulations to grade five Prime Minister David and the rest of the members of the Foundation Builders Party.

Goal : Government Vocabulary

What are some words do you need to know to understand what government does?

(note- some of the examples were generated from a discussion about how students played in the forest at the primary campus)

1.Resources – living and non-living things we use to survive. (ex. Trees, water, oil)
2.Power – ability to use and collect and decide how resources are used.
3.state – an area of land where people live and use resources (ex. country, city, province, state)
4.Citizen – a person who lives in a state and can help make decisions.
5.Government – a group of people that make decisions for a state (ex. Boss, 2nd boss etc.)
6.Politician – someone who works in politics and government

In Grade 5 F we have been studying natural resources, both renewable and non-renewable. This week we did a mini research project to start the chapter on non-renewable resources. It started with one question:
What are non-renewable resources?
Students produced 1 page of information based on this question.
Answering the question led to many more questions. Students could then research their own questions linked to the first question.

Students have been assigned a new started question.

What is a mine?
Students research for the question, develop more questions and produce a page of information that they understand.
It can include pictures and it can be hand written or typed. It can also be emailed to school.

Next week Tuesday, Sept. 27 to Friday, September 30 you will need to plan an alternate route to middle campus. There will be NO access to 88 Avenue from 162 Street due to construction. 5K NEWS

SERVICE HOURS: Thank you for writing service hours in the student planners. Times are adding up for some students. Please note that service hours should be in 30 minute increments or hour increments and not 10 minutes or 15 minutes etc.

OCCASIONAL SPELLING HOMEWORK: This past week I sent home the first spelling practice sheet. Students wrote it in their planners to complete. These spelling sheets should only take 5 minutes or so. Please keep your eyes out for these!

A lot of grade 5 kids took digital cameras on the field trip to Victoria.
We would love to see some of the pictures students took...so...we are having the first Photo contest.

There are three categories People, Scenery/Landscapes, and Museum/Legislative Building.
Please email your photos to Mr. Fernhout. Please attach full size full resolution images to your email.

Rules.
1. Only 1 (one) photo per category per student. You can enter a maximum of three; one in each category.
2. Entry Deadline is Tuesday November 30.
3. Voting will start on the photos on Tuesday November 30.
4. Photos with the most votes will have their photos enlarged, printed and hung in the foyer of the Middle Campus. At the end of the display winner will take their photos home. There will also be other prizes for each category.

Service Hours – Please remind your child to keep up with service hours and to bring them in as they do them. They are due Monday, Nov. 22.
Victoria-We are getting very excited! Here are a few things you should know about our trip.
Students must be at the school by 7:15 am whereby they will check in with their classroom teacher and then meet their small group leader. Please do not arrive before 7:05 am, as there will not be supervision until then. We will be leaving promptly at 7:25 am. Anyone arriving later than 7:25 am is welcome to meet us at the ferry terminal.
Students must be picked up at SCMS in the evening between 7:15 and 7:30pm. Parents may want to make sure that the 5:00 pm ferry sailed as scheduled. If you choose to do this, the web address is www.bcferries.bc.ca. Click Current Conditions at the bottom of your screen.
Students should bring rain gear, warm clothes, a lunch, a morning and an afternoon snack and $15.00 for supper on the ferry. Money will be given to the group leader to hold for the day. Photographs may be taken most places, so your child may bring a camera but they will be responsible for it. Please label everything with your child’s name and our school’s name as well. They may not bring electronics such as iPods, Gameboys, or any other electronic games. They may bring small multiplayer games for the ferry.
We are looking forward to a fun-filled, informative day in our province’s capital. Please pray for good weather and safe travel. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Victoria- We will be going on Wednesday, Nov. 17. We will be leaving at 7:25 am Please have your child at the middle school between 7:05-7:15. We will be coming home on the 5:00pm ferry and should be back at the middle school by 7:15pm. Please pick up your child by 7:30. If you want to see if the ferry arrived on time please check the BC Ferries website. Each student will need to bring a lunch, two snacks, and $15.00 for supper on the ferry. Thanks to the following parents for volunteering to come with us- Mrs. Dieleman, Mrs. Davidson, Mrs. Schaffrick, Mrs. Kim, Mrs, Wagler, Mr. Banbait, Mrs., DeJager, Mr. Hipolito, Mrs. Wiebe, Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Versluis, Mr. Chan, Mrs. Jonker, Mr. Rathore, Mrs. Noort, Mrs. Kersbergen, Mrs. Huguet and Mrs. Cuadra.

Social Studies- our next unit is Government. This unit will be a student directed learning project. Students will be asking questions about government and then doing some research to find the answers. We will be doing a lot of our research on the internet and are asking you to consider allowing your child to bring any device that has wifi capabilities to school to be used only during this unit time. We will be locking these devices in the room when we aren’t there and they will only be used for research. Some examples of wifi devices may be laptops, iPod touch, or iPad. If you have any information about this unit or know someone who can come and speak to the classes, please let us know.

Service Hours – Please remind your child to keep up with service hours and to bring them in as they do them. They are due Monday, Nov. 22.

Grade 5 Victoria- Our Victoria trip has been booked!! We will be travelling to Victoria on Wednesday, Nov. 17 as part of our social studies unit on Canadian Government. We are getting very excited! Here are a few things you should know about our trip.

Students must be at the school by 7:15 am whereby they will check in with their classroom teacher and then meet their small group leader. Please do not arrive before 7:05 am, as there will not be supervision until then. We will be leaving promptly at 7:25 am. Anyone arriving later than 7:25 am is welcome to meet us at the ferry terminal.

Students may be picked up at SCMS in the evening between 7:15 and 7:30pm. Parents may want to make sure that the 5:00 pm ferry sailed as scheduled. If you choose to do this, the web address is www.bcferries.bc.ca. Click Current Conditions at the bottom of your screen.

Students should bring rain gear, warm clothes, a lunch, a morning and an afternoon snack and $15.00 for supper on the ferry. Money will be given to the group leader to hold for the day. Photographs may be taken most places, so your child may bring a camera but they will be responsible for it. Please label everything with your child’s name and our school’s name as well. They may not bring electronics such as iPods, Gameboys, or any other electronic games. They may bring small multiplayer games for the ferry.

In short, on this trip we are going to tour the Parliament buildings, visit the Royal BC Museum, and maybe explore the inner harbour. We are also going to enjoy the ferry!

We are looking forward to a fun-filled, informative day in our province’s capital. Please pray for good weather and safe travel. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

If you are interested in putting your name on the list to come with us please let us know by Wednesday Nov. 3. We will let you know by Friday, Nov. 5 who will be coming with us.

Painting with Light Stencils

Steps to paint with light.
1. Make a cut out stencil.
2. Cover the openings with tissue paper.
3. Cut a large hole for the flash and a small hole for the stencil.
4. Tape the stencil to the box.
5. Use a camera flash or LED flashlight- put it in the small opening.
6. Set your camera so that the shutter stays open for a while in a dark room.
7. Push the shutter. Pop the flash a bunch of times or turn your flashlight on and off. Move around the room.
8. Look at the pictures.
9. See what you could improve. Then try ti again.
